Mark Stephenson.
With fifteen years experience in architecture and the building industry, including over three postgraduate years in the heritage sector, Mark has broad experience in undertaking research, assessment and analysis of the built environment and specialises in heritage planning and practical restoration guidance.

Whilst working in the UK, as a full time Conservation Officer for Local Government, Mark’s role was to raise awareness of the historic environment. At statutory level he took part in pre-application meetings, carried out site visits and provided timely expert and detailed heritage advice relating to planning proposals affecting heritage buildings and their settings, conservation areas, historic landscapes and other historic assets. Strategically, he has written policies, guidelines, strategies, conservation management plans, undertaken character appraisals and contributed to town centre regeneration studies and action plans. He has provided heritage advice on Council’s own heritage buildings and monitored the restoration work.

Mark was involved in enforcement cases and provided written evidence at planning appeals. In promoting the importance of the historic environment Mark has formulated and delivered in house training and presentations to a variety of professional and recreational audiences.

Since arriving in Melbourne in 2009, Mark has worked in private architectural practice on a range of heritage projects from single properties to industrial sites. He has compiled heritage impact statements to accompany planning applications; provided assessment and design guidance on small and large developments; written expert evidence for VCAT; and provided strategic advice to State Government. Mark has undertaken research, assessment and analysis to compile citations and statements of significance for new or review of existing heritage places, and uses his appreciation of the Burra Charter to deliver sound conservation practice. In continuing with his Local Government expertise, Mark has provided a heritage advisor consultancy service to the City of Whitehorse, Shire of Nillumbik and currently works with the City Of Boroondara.
